“Atlante Calvino. Literature and Visualization” is a platform that visually explores the corpus of Italo Calvino's literary works, adding a series of literary investigations on his production. The literary team of the Unité d’italien of the University of Geneva and the research laboratory DensityDesign collaborated for three years (2017-2020) to connect a literary object and the analyses of systems conducted through visualizations.
The project is rich in very diverse forms of visualization:
Inmagik was involved in the project for the development of some visualizations. in particular "Combine", "Realism" and "Plot" and for the support to the internationalization of the site. The implementations were made in Javascript language with the React library.
Combine: The visualization shows the structure of Calvino's books with columns representing texts and segments indicating three aspects: external, internal, and formal. It allows exploration of details like structure, sequences, and internal layers.
Realism: The analysis looks at how Calvino represents terrestrial space in his short stories from 1945 to 1983. It shows a shift from external settings and frequent movement to internal spaces and stillness.
Plot: The visualization displays Calvino's plots as colored lines moving on two axes: horizontal for narrative progression and vertical for sequence types. It allows comparison of plots and detailed analysis of story beginnings and endings.
